One of the questions I hear from families planning a Disney Cruise is:

“Should we choose early dining or late dining?” And it's a great question!

Disney Cruise Line uses assigned dinner seatings for its rotational dining experience. Currently, the standard dinner times are approximately 5:45 PM and 8:15 PM, although the exact time can vary by up to about 15 minutes depending on the sailing.

So, which Dinner Seating option should you choose?

The answer really depends on your family's schedule, bedtime routine, and how you like to spend your vacation.

Here's a look at the differences between early and late dining on Disney Cruise Line.

What Is Early Dining on Disney Cruise Line?

Early dining is generally around 5:45 PM. For families with younger children, this can be an attractive option because it fits more naturally into an earlier evening routine.

Disney Cruise Line specifically schedules dinner seatings and live shows so guests can enjoy both dinner and an evening performance. Guests with the first dinner seating can attend the later performance, while guests with the second seating can attend the earlier performance.

Why Families May Like Early Dining

Early dining may be a good fit if:

Your children have an early bedtime
Your family normally eats dinner earlier at home
You prefer enjoying dinner earlier in the evening on family vacations

For families with little ones, having dinner at a familiar time can make the evening feel a little easier. And there's something pretty nice about finishing dinner and still having the rest of the evening ahead of you!

What Is Late Dining on Disney Cruise Line?

Late dining is generally around 8:15 PM. That may sound late if you're used to eating dinner at home at 6:00, but some families actually prefer having the later seating.

With late dining, you attend the earlier evening show and then head to dinner afterward. Don’t worry because Disney Cruise Line plans the schedule so both seating groups have an opportunity to attend the evening entertainment.

Why Families May Like Late Dining

Late dining may work well if:

Your family naturally stays up later on vacations
You want more flexibility earlier in the evening - Hello to Adult Happy Hour!
You enjoy taking your time with afternoon activities
You want to watch the earlier evening show before dinner

The important thing to remember is that neither seating is the “right” choice for everyone.

There really isn't one answer that works for every family. It's really about what works best for your family. When I'm helping a family plan a Disney Cruise, I like to look at the entire vacation rather than choosing a dining time in isolation. When you book a Disney Cruise online, the 8:15 PM seating is currently assigned automatically. If you'd prefer a different seating, you can request a change through My Reservations. If your preferred time isn't available, Disney Cruise Line also allows guests to join the waitlist. So don't panic if you don't initially receive the dining time you'd hoped to reserve!

My best recommendations:

Choose early dining if your family prefers an earlier dinner, has younger children, or follows an earlier bedtime routine.

Choose late dining if your family stays up later, likes having more time before dinner, or would prefer watching the earlier evening show.

And remember—you'll still get to experience Disney's rotational dining, entertainment and the full cruise experience regardless of which seating you're assigned. The key is finding the option that makes your family's vacation feel easier and more enjoyable.
